Metrolink Honors One Year Anniversary of Deadly Crash

Saturday, September 12th marks the one year anniversary of the Metrolink crash in Chatsworth that killed 25.
Metrolink has erected a plaque in Union Station near the crash site to honor those who lost their lives in the train accident.
Last year’s accident occurred when Metrolink train 111 collided head-on with a Union Pacific freight train. Preliminary investigation reports disclose that the Metrolink train’s engineer was using his cell phone to text message while operating the train that day.

Toddler Attacked by Pit bull

A three year old Fullerton girl remains hospitalized after being attacked by her family’s pet pit bull on Monday evening.
The toddler is in intensive care at the pediatric unit of Western Medical Center in Santa Ana, suffering from lacerations and wounds to her face and neck.
The girl’s family said their dog showed no previous signs of aggression.
Toddler Killed in Trolley-Bike Accident
A four year old girl was killed and her father injured in San Diego this weekend when her father, who was riding a bicycle with his daughter strapped onto the back in a child seat, was struck by a Chula Vista trolley. The toddler, identified as Veronica Ramirez, was not wearing a helmet. By law, bicycle riders under 18 years of age must wear a bicycle helmet while riding on a public road (VC §21212).
According to California Highway Patrol’s 2007 Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS), there were 124 deaths and 10,590 injuries to bicyclists throughout California.
In this incident, the father attempted to steer around the trolley gates after they had lowered and the signals had been activated. Not only did this action put Veronica in danger, but allowing her to ride without a bicycle helmet also endangered this young girl.

Family of Man Killed in Golf Accident Awarded Large Settlement

The family of an Irvine, California man who was killed at an annual golf retreat in 2007 was awarded a $1.5 million settlement this week after a jury found the golf course responsible for the incident that led to his tragic death.
Edwin Payne, 65, was golfing at the Pala Mesa Golf Resort in Fallbrook with work colleagues when he attempted to make a U-Turn at the second hole. Payne was unable to make the tight turn and lost control of the cart, sending him over a small curb and down a 40 foot slope, eventually plunging off an 80-foot cliff and onto Highway 395.
The golf course had no signs warning golfers that beyond the curb and surrounding foliage lay an 80 foot cliff.
This incident could have been prevented had the golf course taken steps to warn their patrons of the dangerous nearby cliff.

Dog Attack in Huntington Beach

Laura Abrahams, 39, of Huntington Beach, was attacked by a city police dog on May 25 in Parker, Arizona, The Orange County Register reports. Abrahams sustained 2 cuts and a puncture wound which required between 20 and 30 stitches.
Abrahams has filed a claim for an undisclosed amount.
In California, the dog owner is liable for all injuries inflicted by his dog on a human being even if the owner was not negligent, according to the “strict liability statute”. California is currently one of the only states that carries a statute regarding dog bites, which was implemented to “…prevent dogs from being a hazard to the community”. The statute benefits victims of dog attacks, in that liability is automatically placed on the owner regardless of the specific circumstances of a claim.
Simi Valley Car Accident

Two people were hospitalized with severe injuries after a suspected drunken driver and four other vehicles were involved in a crash on Highway 118 eastbound in Simi Valley on Sunday evening.
According to a report in the Ventura County Star, the suspected drunk driver had two previous hit and run crashes and the police plan to arrest him on suspicion of felony hit and run as well as DUI once he is released from the hospital.
I wish all those involved in the accident well as they recover from injuries and the emotional trauma of a serious collision.

Suspected Carbon Monoxide Poisoning Kills Family in Detroit

Three children and their father died on July 16, 2009 from suspected carbon monoxide poisoning in Detroit, Michigan. According to an article in the Detroit News, the family was using a generator in their basement to power two air conditioners in their home. The family was using the generator because the power had been shut off in their home after they fell behind on utility payments.
According to a spokesman for DTE Electric who was quoted in the Detroit News article, “A generator should never be operated in a home. They produce carbon monoxide and other fumes that accumulate”.
