Why Bike Helmets Are So Important
In California, everyone under the age of 18 is required to wear a helmet when riding a bicycle, skateboard, scooter, or roller skates. People over 18 are not legally required to wear a bike helmet, but it’s a good idea for everyone. Wearing a helmet always adds extra protection and sets an excellent example for younger riders.
Bike helmets may be light and comfortable, but they are designed to absorb energy on impact in the event of a collision. This design helps prevent concussions and brain injuries. According to the National Institute of Health (NIH), wearing a bike helmet reduces the risk of serious head injury by 60 percent for riders who suffer a collision or fall.
For your helmet to do its job, it must fit correctly and be properly adjusted. That means your helmet is:
- Snug. The helmet should fit snugly on your head and not slide around.
- Level. Your helmet should not be tilted. Instead, it should sit evenly on top of your head.
- See that the straps make the letter “Y” right below your ears. You shouldn’t be able to slide more than two fingers beneath your chin.
- Above your eyes. The helmet should sit high enough to not obstruct your view.

Time for a New Helmet?
Inspecting your helmet regularly is crucial. Look for missing or worn-down pads, cracks in the shell, or weakened straps. It’s a good idea to replace your helmet every few years, even if it doesn’t show any obvious signs of wear and tear. Helmets should always be replaced after a collision as soon as possible.
